Indoor Groups off to a great start!!

posted Feb 20, 2012 3:12 PM by Scott Blanford   [ updated Feb 21, 2012 4:22 AM ]

Competing at the Penncrest High School Indoor Guard and Percussion Invitational the SHS Indoor Ensembles all did very well!! The Percussion Ensemble performing their show Chess, took 1st place in the Scholastic A Standstill class with a score of 66.9. This was the first competitive performance in school history for the ensemble.

The Indoor BLUE Guard picked up where they left off last year with a strong 3rd place finish. The BLUE Guard's show is entitled Come Fly with Me and explores the great airline Pan Am and the stewardesses that made it famous.

And the, brand new first year group, Indoor GOLD Guard, also competing in their first competitive performance in school history finished 5th place out of 10 units. Their show, These Dreams, is performed to the song White Nights by Oh Land.

Each of the ensembles had entertaining performances that were very well received by the audience and judges. After their own performances the students enjoyed watching other groups from the southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware region perform as well. The groups are looking forward to this Saturday Feb. 25th, for the first ever SHS Indoor Showcase. Congratulations to all of the members of the SHS Indoor Ensembles!!

Jazz Band is Outstanding!!

posted Feb 12, 2012 12:03 PM by Scott Blanford   [ updated Feb 12, 2012 12:15 PM ]

Congratulations to the SHS Big Band on their OUTSTANDING Rating at the Upper Darby HS Jazz Fest on Sat. 2/12. The band had a solid first performance of the year. They played a variety of different styles, including the swinging - Groovin' High, lush ballad with vocals - When I Fall in Love, and hot Latin cooker - Tiger of San Pedro. The band's rating this past weekend was better that their start last year at UD and everyone is excited about the programs growth. The band members also enjoyed the camaraderie of each others company and got to see and hear some awesome bands from the surrounding area. Joining the band for the trip to UDHS were members of the SHS Lab Band and other members of the band program. The band is off to a great start and looking forward to their next gig at home on Sat. 3/17 when they host the first annual SHS Jazz Fest!!

Booster Dinner & Auction a Huge Success!!!

posted Feb 6, 2012 5:44 AM by Scott Blanford   [ updated Feb 6, 2012 2:48 PM ]

The Italian Dinner & Auction sponsored by the SHS Band Boosters was another huge success!! In the 9 years of having this event it was perhaps the most successful one yet. With over 175 people in attendance and more than 80 silent and live auction items to bid on, including door prizes and a 50/50 drawing, a great time was had by all. Bertucci's once again provided the amazing Italian food of spaghetti, meatballs, ziti, and salad, and rolls. The Indoor Guard, Indoor Percussion, and Jazz Band members began setting up for the event at 2 PM and stayed throughout until clean-up at 10 PM. They also worked as servers, runners, and auction presenters.

Of course there are many parents to thank starting with Karen Ernest, the Dinner and Auction Coordinator. Karen did an amazing job organizing the whole event and much of the success is due to her tireless effort. Thanks also to Loree Antonik, Indoor Performing Ensembles Parent Coordinator and Booster Treasurer, Brad Ernest, emcee and auctioneer, and all of the parents who helped with the event including, Roe Vecchione, Christine Ross, Diana Galantino, Marie Lawrence, Terri Carlson, Joanne and Ray McFall, Jackie Daddona, Marybeth Grubb, David Bollinger, Theresa and Steve Johnson, Terri Carlson, Sharon Orlando, Jeanne Dewan, Dawn and Dave Liscom, Lisa Bollinger, Lisa and Glenn Eckard, Dan McDermott, Paul Viggiano and Nancy Hart and all the Ensemble participants’ and their parents. If we missed anyone, please let us know and we’ll add you to the list!!!

Finally, Special Thanks to the many vendors, individuals, and families, who donated goods and services. This event would not have been such a great success without your support of our kids and program. We are all looking forward to next year's event!!!
