SHS Big Band & SHS Jazz Lab Band
The Jazz Ensemble experience at Springfield High School is organized into two-parts, the SHS Big Band and the SHS Jazz Lab Band. Both ensembles provide students the opportunity to learn about and perform jazz music in a variety of styles ranging from swing to Latin jazz and rock. The Big Band is for more experienced jazz musicians while the Jazz Lab focuses primarily on building performance skills in the jazz style. Both groups also provide instruction in improvisation. The Big Band performs music written for standard big band instrumentation, which is, 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, and rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass and drums). The Jazz Lab Band performs music of the same genre and style as the Big Band but the instrumentation can vary year-to-year depending on the specific needs of the ensemble and/or repertoire selections. Each member of the Big Band and Jazz Lab Band must attend weekly rehearsals, sectionals as needed, and performances as scheduled. Both jazz ensembles rehearse mainly on Wednesday evenings from January until the end of May. Both jazz ensembles will also perform in the SHS Jazz Festival, SHS Jazz Concert, and Jazz under the Stars. Additional performances will vary depending on the ensemble and may also be added to the calendar depending upon request and availability. All the students in both ensembles are expected to participate in the Indoor Ensembles Dinner/Auction. Auditions for the ensembles are open to any student already enrolled in an ensemble performance class (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Orchestra). Exceptions can be considered only in rare cases and approved by the band director. Auditions are held in early December and materials will be available accordingly. |
